PRODUCT STORY Vol.15

—— Since around when had you been thinking about turning GOBLET into a product?

We are constantly conducting market research and gathering feedback on what items are in demand, but around 2023, there was a request for “a glass with a generous capacity for drinks.” At that time, I decided to design and develop a new glass. With the thought that “while making a standard glass would be perfectly fine, I want to create something with a presence that feels a little more special than the usual,” I decided on a goblet-type glass with a short stem. The design was finalized around September 2023.

Prior to being added to the MOHEIM lineup, a collaboration model with BLUE BOTTLE COFFEE was released in June 2024. It has been very well received since its launch and has been maintaining strong sales.

—— What is the concept and the thought behind the design of GOBLET?

“To create a glass that would be used repeatedly and become an essential presence on the table. To have people experience a little bit of luxury in their daily lives through its use.” GOBLET was born out of this desire.

Long-stemmed glasses, like wine glasses, tend to limit the choice of drinks, and I think people may sometimes hesitate to use them frequently. For GOBLET, the aim was to create a glass for casual, everyday use, with a design that makes whatever you pour into it feel special. Furthermore, it is characterized by a form and size that are also charming when used as a dessert cup.

Another crucial point was the capacity of the glass. The size was designed to hold a generous amount of drink, approximately 355ml when full. It feels like just the right size for everyday usability.

—— This form and design strike me as something that surprisingly might not have existed before. There is a certain uniqueness in how the upper glass and the lower stem are integrated into a single piece.

As you pointed out, I also feel that GOBLET is quite unique. I conducted various researches myself, but it seems that glasses with this specific size and similar silhouette are not easily found. While there are beer glasses where the entire glass, including the stem, is formed as a single unit, most of them are tall and large, often with a capacity exceeding 650ml.

To prioritize the beauty of how it looks when filled and placed on a table, I designed the silhouette to create a sense of presence that enhances the entire setting.

When filled, the liquid flows into the stem, making the characteristic silhouette naturally emerge. Especially with the clear and smoke colors, the beverage itself seems to draw out the glass’s form. At first, I considered making the stem solid, but in the end, I feel that having this hollow stem became a significant advantage for the design.

—— Are there any other advantages to this particular form?

The GOBLET features a tapered shape that narrows toward the rim, a form familiar in wine and brandy glasses. By adopting this shape, it prevents the aroma from escaping and, at the same time, adjusts the surface area of the liquid exposed to the air to help retain the scent within the glass. In other words, it is a form designed specifically to enhance the enjoyment of a drink’s aroma.

With this form, I believe GOBLET is ideal for enjoying the bouquet of wine and beer, as well as the aroma of coffee.

The glass thickness is finished at approximately 2mm—neither too thin nor too thick—to ensure a comfortable feel on the lips. It is a thickness that allows for heavy daily use without any hesitation. Furthermore, being made of heat-resistant glass and being microwave and dishwasher safe are also pleasing features that make one want to use it every day.

—— There are five colors in total, with some of them evoking a certain sense of nostalgia.

I intentionally chose a color palette that feels familiar to everyone. Don’t you think these shades look like something you’ve seen somewhere before? Colors like amber, green, and cobalt are timeless—they aren’t swayed by trends and have been loved for generations as classic glass colors. Personally, I feel that amber and cobalt evoke the nostalgic atmosphere of Showa-era coffee shops (Japanese cafes from the mid-20th century) with their classic, retro charm.

The combination of a modern silhouette with these universal glass colors creates an interesting contrast and freshness.

While using the same color offers a nice sense of unity, mixing different shades also results in a wonderful, natural harmony. I would be delighted if you could find your own favorite combination.

—— Could you tell us how this unique form is manufactured?

Skilled craftsmen carefully finish each piece using a “mouth-blown mold technique.” This involves placing heated, softened glass into a mold and blowing air into it from the inside to shape it. However, the process doesn’t start with the mold; they first perform “free-blowing” to shape the glass in the air before placing it into the GOBLET mold for the final shaping. Watching the craftsmen work with such care, I’m always amazed by their skill and feel a sense of confidence and warmth. I truly feel that this is something that could never be achieved without their years of expertise and experience.

—— Were there any particular challenges you faced during the development process?

We spent a significant amount of time searching for a factory in Japan that could handle the production. However, We unfortunately couldn’t find one capable of mass-producing GOBLET as a heat-resistant color glass that is both microwave and dishwasher safe. The unique shape, in particular, raised the level of difficulty, but it was also crucial to achieve an accessible price point. We stayed committed until we found a factory that could meet all of our “non-negotiable” requirements.

We worked closely with the factory that took on the production of GOBLET, going through numerous quality alignment sessions and discussing every detail until we were both satisfied. Some even said our quality standards at MOHEIM were “strict.” However, the factory fully understood that quality was our top priority, and they listened and responded to even our most detailed requests. I am extremely pleased with the final result, and I am truly grateful to the craftsmen and everyone involved in the manufacturing process.

—— How would you like people to use GOBLET in their daily lives?

Personally, I think this glass has become the perfect choice for coffee or iced lattes, so I hope GOBLET becomes a piece that adds color to your coffee breaks.
It is also a glass to be enjoyed with alcohol, such as beer or wine, and it is a perfect companion for those moments of bliss when serving sweets or desserts.
Since GOBLET adds a touch of flair to hospitality or when hosting guests, I am sure they will be delighted.
Also, using it as a candle holder is another wonderful option.

GOBLET also makes a wonderful gift. I guess choosing a pair as a present would be a particularly lovely option. I hope you will consider using the gift-wrapping service on the MOHEIM online store to create a beautiful gift for someone special.

I’d love for GOBLET to elevate your usual drinks as it plays an active role in your life from morning to night, every single day. It would be a pleasure to see GOBLET become a staple in your daily life—a companion that you feel like reaching for again and again.
