PRODUCT STORY Vol.14
—— Please tell us about the design concept of the WATER BOTTLE.
The heart of the concept was to design a water bottle you’d want to carry with you every day—not just for outdoor adventures or gym sessions, but as a stylish companion for your daily outings and even at the office.
With the growing demand for water bottles, a wide variety has entered the market. However, I feel that most of them are designed primarily for outdoor use or workouts—that is, they tend to lean toward a “sports activity” style.
The MOHEIM’s WATER BOTTLE was designed with town use and office use in mind—something easy and enjoyable to carry, yet also harmonious with interior spaces. The idea came from wanting a water bottle that makes taking it in and out of your bag a small delight, and one you’d want to keep on your office desk at all times.
I aimed for a design with colors and materials unlike any other water bottle on the market, paired with a gentle, softly rounded silhouette and form. Simple yet inviting, the design combines a comforting texture with carefully considered color choices.
—— What would you say is the most distinctive feature of the water bottle, and which aspects did you pay particular attention to?
We focused especially on the lid and spout.
The unique patterns that emerge during the molding process are a defining feature, and we wanted to highlight the matte texture as well. Since each pattern comes out differently, every piece has its own individual expression, which is part of its charm.
Actually, we experimented extensively at the molding factory to make sure the patterns would come out beautifully. Everyone on the development team worked closely to balance individuality with a natural, authentic texture.
The material is an eco-friendly biomass composite resin made with 55% wood-derived cellulose fiber. It not only cuts down on petroleum-based plastics, but also produces less CO₂ when disposed of compared to traditional resins.
The body is made from BPA-free Tritan™, which is safe and dependable. It has a glass-like transparency, is highly resistant to heat and impact, and doesn’t easily retain odors.
—— The colors, paired with the design, are very much in line with MOHEIM’s signature style.
There are five color options: green × coral, gray × dark moss, pink × beige, mustard × gray, and black × amber, each showcasing MOHEIM’s signature bi-color style. I hope everyone can find the combination they love and enjoy using it.
Rather than going with a clear body, we selected five different colors that complement the lid and spout. We also designed some darker shades to help obscure the color of the drink inside.
Both the body and the lid and spout went through countless rounds of color adjustment to achieve the ideal hues. Because the bi-color design is such a key feature, the way the colors interact is crucial, so we experimented over and over, pushing the process right up to the point of mass production without cutting any corners.
—— It seems you spent a lot of time perfecting the design without compromise. Were there any parts that were especially difficult?
I was personally involved as the director, and together with the development team, we made numerous trips to the factory, working hand in hand with the production staff to move the development forward.
The factory has many years of experience in plastic injection molding, producing everything from household items to industrial products, and takes pride in its high-quality standards. The staff carried out countless experiments, working closely together as a team. Every part of this WATER BOTTLE is carefully finished and inspected by hand, achieving a precision and quality that machines alone simply can’t replicate.
For instance, with the spout part, small holes used to form at the edges when it was removed from the mold, which was quite a headache. But thanks to the skill and creativity of the production team, we managed to completely get rid of them, keeping the piece looking flawless.
—— It’s clear that a lot of attention was paid to the finer details. So the gaskets can be removed as well?
For hygiene reasons, the team recommended that the gaskets on both the lid and spout be easily removable for cleaning.
We also put a lot of thought into the gaskets’ design to make them easy to remove, adding small bumps for better handling. And to ensure their key function—preventing leaks—we spent time refining the initial prototypes, making them thicker and more reliable.
Launching a new product is always a race against time, yet everyone on the team worked tirelessly, refusing to compromise on quality to achieve the best possible result.
—— The packaging complements the WATER BOTTLE nicely—did you focus on that aspect as much as the product itself?
This material is produced using paper that incorporates pulped palm fruit shells, the byproduct left after palm oil extraction.
Normally, the leftover shells from palm fruits are discarded, which can generate methane if left alone, and burning them still produces CO₂. Using them in paper helps reduce environmental impact and contributes to forest conservation by partially replacing wood pulp.
The packaging’s natural color and feel make it a perfect match for both the MOHEIM brand and the WATER BOTTLE itself. And of course, it’s wonderful that the material is sustainable.
—— How do you hope people will use the WATER BOTTLE?
My own experience with non-insulated water bottles was actually one of the triggers for creating this WATER BOTTLE.
Recently, water stations that can be used easily in offices or around the city have become more common. There are also apps and services that encourage the use of personal bottles and provide information on locations where free refills are available, making it convenient to stay hydrated even when you’re out and about.
Please make the MOHEIM’s WATER BOTTLE one of your go-to bottles for outings, and we hope it stays by your side so you can use it wherever and whenever you like.
